What is embroidery?
Embroidery is a process in which thread is stitched into material, creating a custom design with a commercial embroidery machine. We work with a Barudan single head embroidery machine with 15 needles.Take a look at our samples page to see finished products: http://ridgefieldmonograms.com/samples/
Can this <<insert product>> be embroidered?
This is undoubtedly the most common question we get, and the answer is almost always ‘yes.’ If you can get a needle through the item, we can embroidery it.
We refer to most materials as ‘soft goods’, meaning any type of cloth or fabric such as wool, linen, cotton, canvas etc. Most of these materials can be embroidered with a specially designed embroidery hoop. The embroidery hoop holds the fabric area stationary, which creates tight stitching and remarkable design detail. Embroidery hoops come in all sizes--if we can hoop the fabric, we can embroider it! For example, we can embroider a shirt pocket (without sewing the pocket closed). There are also clamping devices that allow me to embroidery items that are too thick to be hooped.
Items that we cannot embroider usually have a solid, hard frame, like luggage, and cannot be fitted to the machine. If you have any doubt, please call or email us. You might be surprised with what we can work with!
How much does embroidery cost?
Our prices start at $8.00 for a simple shirt monogram. The price depends on the size and complexity of the design. Please call or email about your specific job, and we are happy to provide a quote.
How long does embroidery take?
Although it depends on the job, we request a week lead time. We can usually have your item to you in just a few days. If the job involves a custom digitizing design, we will require the full week.
Our aim is always to please our clients, and if you have a rush order we will do our absolute best to accommodate you!
What is a monogram?
A monogram is a person’s two or three letter initials. It’s a great way to personalize your shirt, handkerchief, napkin, towels, tote bags or bedding.
In what order should the monogram initials be?
If you are using initials all the same size, then the initials are placed in regular name order: First, Middle, Last Initial.
If you are using a traditional monogram, then the last initial is placed in the center position and is larger in size than the first and middle Initials. The most common order of the initials for a married couple is to put HER initial in the first position, the shared LAST NAME initial large in the center of the monogram, and HIS initial in the final position.
But rules are meant to be broken. Many women do not assume a new last name when married, and many people have hyphenated last names. Any configuration that makes sense to you can be designed.
What type of thread is used?
The most common thread we use in our embroidery process is a Polyester thread made by Robison-Anton. The thread is strong and durable and comes in many vibrant shades with a nice sheen. There are specialty threads that we also have available such as metallic, glow-in-the-dark, and fire retardant thread. We will work with you to find the thread best suited to your job. You can view threads on this page: http://ridgefieldmonograms.com/threads/
Can I wash my embroidery?
Yes, you can wash the embroidery. Do not use chlorine bleach, and do not iron with a hot iron. Handled with minimum care, your embroidery should be vibrant for many years. The embroidery often outlasts the item on which it is sewn.
I have a custom logo that I would like embroidered. How would I go about this?
We specialize in digitizing, which means we translate a two dimensional image into stitches (see our custom designs page for more detail: http://ridgefieldmonograms.com/designs/). In order to create a design, we need artwork in a vector-based drawing program such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. . The better the art work, the better the outcome. If you do not have vector art, we can work from a bitmap or JPEG, but this will require an additional design fee due to the time required.
How expensive it is to have a custom logo created?
The cost of preparing an image for stitch will depend on the size and intricacy of the design. The set-up fee is a one-time expense and after the design is created, you pay the standard embroidery fee per garment.
Once I get a custom design made, can I use it on everything?
Embroidery is digitized specific to the fabric characteristics. Once the garment changes dramatically (sweatshirt as opposed to hats, for example) or the embroidery application requires a much different size, then there will probably be an editing charge.
I like embroidery, but I am not crazy about having my initials all over my home. Any suggestions?
We have endless ideas! That’s the fun part. We love projects where we are able to explore creatively with our clients and bring concepts to life. Recently we worked with an interior designer and duplicated elements from wall paper by embroidering them onto window treatments.
Embroidery is not just for monograms and business logos! We have done some gorgeous custom beach towels, unique throw pillows, linens and towel sets all of which featured customers’ own unique designs.
What is Applique?
Applique is the process of using fabric as portions of the embroidery design and sewing an outline border around the fabric. This technique can bring additional texture into the design or can be used to lessen the stitch count of the design.
